Calling yourself an artist, creative, designer, maker, you name it…often comes with some interesting territory sometimes. I'm not saying bad territory per se…but interesting.
I recently graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. I learned many things in these past four years. How to vectorize an image, kerning, principles of hierarchy…And while all of that technical design stuff is great and has aided in my journey to work in the creative world professionally, there are some things that these past few years have taught me that I have realized is much more important.
You see, I think differently than most people. And in many areas of life I often found myself struggling to fit in. But these are not bad things.
I have been able to come to a very profound realization about myself and what I want to accomplish. I love creative work and I love people. I love stories. Ideas. Passion. I love when people recognize what they are good at and what they love and use it for good - use it for God. When people don't get bogged down by the weight and pressure of society and just simply do what they are called to do, now that is a beautiful thing. I don't fully know what the future holds for me, but I DO know I don't want to do it alone. In fact, I want to do it with a community of people passionate about what they do. Whether it's design, illustration, photo, music, jewelry making... I have realized that I not only want to come along-side these people, but create a place where these things can grow.
This is where the roots of Dead Last were planted.
Everyone wants to be accepted. And here's the problem: we find ourselves living in a culture that thinks it has defined what it is to be "right", accepted, and beautiful. Coming in "last" in certain areas of life is the very thing that shaped me into the creative thinker and explorer that I am today. It caused me to embrace my creativity rather than shame it, realizing that I was created to create. I wanted to provide a place and a community of people that recognizes the individual. The makers, the storytellers, the free spirits, the misfits, the dreamers. All those who are pursuing their passions and striving to grow. The Dead Last Collective is just that. A place to share and sell your work. A place to share your experiences. A place to connect creatives and grow together. We can't all win at society's standards and we shouldn't feel the need to. We choose to come in DEAD LAST.
So how about it!? Let's see where we can take this!
